Hanmer Glamping – Animal friends

We love our animals!

We have two golden retrievers, Willow and Gus.  They will no doubt welcome you with a few barks but soon quieten down. They let us know you’ve arrived, but rest assured they will be in our own private garden and not inviting themselves into yours! If you love dogs, feel free to say hello to them. If not, that’s cool – they stay up at the house with us.

Alpacas – who doesn’t love an alpaca? We have 7 of them. You will see them grazing in the paddocks as you drive down Medway Road. You are welcome to say hello to them. They don’t like to be petted, but if you stand quietly they will come up and give you a sniff and a  good view. If you are loud or try to touch them they are likely to let you know they aren’t keen. If their ears go back flat on their neck and you hear an unusual noise (a bit like a turkey) you’ve overstepped the mark! Alpacas can and will spit, but only if they feel threatened by you.

Then there’s our chickens – less glamorous perhaps, but they are great layers and you will often find fresh free range eggs in “The Shed” –  you are welcome to help yourself to these. In return, if you have food scraps, the chickens will very much appreciate it!

At certain times of year you will notice a large family of Quail that live on and around our property. They generally mind their own business, but are quite fun to watch. Early evening is their most active time, and the tiny chicks are a delight to watch in spring.

Occasionally we get fallow deer  arrive in the garden and around the pods. If we are honest we prefer them to visit the alpaca in the paddocks as we quite like our garden – but it is still special if you catch sight of them.
