We are the owners of Hanmer Glamping – Steve and Jo.

Originally from the UK we have lived and loved New Zealand for the past 17 years, and raised our four children in the Nelson region. When our youngest child left home, we took the opportunity to evaluate life and made the move to Hanmer Springs.

This move coincided with Steve semi-retiring. Originally a mechanic, then computer programmer with his own web development and hosting business for 20 years, he was ready for a change. Now he maintains the gardens and glamping domes, walks the dogs and gets out on his mountain bike as much as possible.

Jo works part time as a nurse, but also has a small peony farm and sells plants online. The garden is also a passion and being quite large, it keeps her busy.

We thought long and hard about what sort of accommodation we wanted to provide, and have come up with Hanmer Glamping as a place that we would want to visit ourselves. Aimed specifically at adults who want slightly different accommodation, with nature at hand but with boutique amenities. We hope you love staying here as much as we’ve loved creating it.

Our Garden

We have a large garden, packed with all sorts of plants. The spring, in particular, puts on a magnificent display with spring bulbs, peonies, fruit blossom and a myriad of other plants all adding to the mix.

You are more than welcome to stroll through the garden during your stay. Each dome has it’s own private garden space, but we are happy for people who appreciate gardens to have a look around ours.

Our Animals

We own two beautiful golden retrievers who are extremely friendly (some might say over friendly!). Don’t worry if you don’t like dogs, they have their own fenced area around our house so they won’t bother you during your stay. If you do like dogs, feel free to say hello to them.

You may notice seven alpaca grazing in the paddocks as you drive along Medway Road – these beautiful animals belong to us. You can say hello to them over the fence. We have alpaca nuts if you want to feed them – just ask us. Alpacas do not like being petted – they prefer to approach you, so if you do want to feed them we can give you a few tips before you head to the paddock. Being animals, we can give you guidelines, but they do have minds of their own and don’t always comply!

We also have a few friendly chickens who will very much appreciate any food scraps you may have – in return they lay us fresh eggs which we share with our guests.
